Relais Poggio Borgoni

San Casciano Val di pesa

A peaceful place not far from Florence

Relais Poggio Borgoni is located on a hill in the Val di Pesa, in the Chianti Classico region, about 20 minutes from Florence, among vineyards and olive groves.

Situated in a quiet wooded area on the top of a hill, it is a family-run vineyard and winery, an osteria (small restaurant) and accommodation. The building used as accommodation shows that it has been carefully maintained over the years, with terracotta floors, antique furniture, a roof with exposed wooden rafters and a wisteria vine hanging down from the entrance like a decoration.

On the opposite side of the house there is the Osteria, which serves as a breakfast room and restaurant. There is also a large terrace and a staircase garden, where the morning mist rises from the Pesa valley and the scent of rosemary, lavender and various dew-soaked herbs is pleasant. It is also nice to spend some quiet time on the terrace, lighting candles and gazing at the Val di Pesa forest as the sun sets.

Dinner in the cosy Osteria, where a small fireplace sits on one side of a stone wall, is also a must. If there was no Osteria, we would have had to drive around in the quiet mountains looking for a restaurant, but here the restaurant is right next to the accommodation, so we can just close the wooden door and walk across the garden. It couldn't be better.

Homemade pici pasta and Tuscan home-style cooking using local ingredients are paired with the winery's own wine. There is also a steak menu. It is much more worth trying than the expensive Fiorentina steak served in the overcrowded restaurants of Florence's city centre.

If you are on your way back to Florence from a trip to Tuscany, or if your schedule does not allow you to travel far from Florence and you are staying close to it, there is no better place to stay. Just 20 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Florence, you will find an unimaginable sense of peace and contentment.
