Hotel Londra Palace
Venice

Historic hotel overlooking the Grand Canal
Hotel Londra Palace is located just one step away from Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace and overlooks the marina where the Grand Canal meets the sea. The spacious marina in front of the hotel, where the statue of St. Emmanuel II stands, is called the Riva degli Schiavoni (Schiavoni Coast), and it is home to the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, the Alilaguna water bus stop, and the gondola station.
'Londra' is the Italian word for London, and it is said that the hotel was originally called 'Angleterre & Pension(English House)' and 'The Londres(London)' when it opened in 1853. It may have been named in this way because it was at a time when a large number of British people were visiting Venice on the Grand Tour.
Londra Palace also has musical connections. From the rooms with views to the right of the hotel, you can see the orphanage and church where Vivaldi once worked. Vivaldi concerts are held here every evening.
It is also said that the Russian composer Tchaikovsky composed his Fourth Symphony while staying in room 106 in 1877. The movement of the composition was called 'do Leoni'. The restaurant on the first floor of the hotel is also called 'do Leoni'. The food is a little expensive, but it's worth sipping a Bellini, a Prosecco-based cocktail made in the Venice area, while sitting outside.
The price is never cheap, even out of season, as it is a luxurious hotel with a long history in a prime location from where you can have a wonderful view of the silhouette of the church of Santa Maria della Salute reflected on the Grand Canal under the red setting sun. However, if you happen to be on the main island of Venice for a special day, it is well worth your while to invest in this view at least once.
