Hotel Commercio & Pellegrino

Venice

For 21st-century pilgrims to Venice

After getting off at the busy San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, walk for a minute along Calle de le Rasse, lined with souvenir shops and restaurants with seafood displays in their windows, and you will find the small sign and entrance to the Hotel Commercio & Pellegrino.

The hotel is located in Calle de le rasse, which is said to have taken its name from the woollen fabric ('rascia') imported from the Balkans and traded at the time of the Republic of Venice. The name of the hotel, 'Commercio', is an Italian word meaning trade or commerce, while 'Pellegrino' means pilgrim.

This building, in existence since the 19th century, would have provided quality accommodation at a reasonable price to the merchants and pilgrims who flocked to Venice from all over the world.

It is located in an alleyway very close to St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace, which are on the other side of the Bridge of Sighs. Also, unlike other accommodations that require you to carry heavy luggage and cross stairs and bridges between numerous waterways, this is an optimally located accommodation that simply requires you to get off at the San Zaccaria bus stop and walk along a flat alley, and yet it is a cost-effective accommodation that insists on a fairly reasonable price.

You can open the windows, but the view is only of a small alley and a building blocking the front, and the room is small with no much fancy decorations. But, as befits a place with a long history, it is neat and clean, with the bare essentials. Unless you come to Venice to spend all day in your room, this is the right place to sleep and relax for a few days.

Afternoon tea in the lobby is also a warm memory for weary travellers who have wandered Venice's intricate alleyways.
