La Pecora Nera

Mazzolla

Paradise behind a blue door

La Pecora Nera is located in Mazzolla, a small hill town near San Gimignano and Volterra. It is a good place to stay on the way from San Gimignano to Siena. It is a really really small village with only a church, a restaurant and a lodging on the small hill.

La Pecora Nera means 'The Black Sheep'. This is not a typical agriturismo on a farm, but a small B&B run by Giovanni and Elisa, who run a nearby farm producing pecorino cheese.

It is a really small place, but it is decorated with eco-friendly items made by local artisans and artists, and it has a philosophy of serving organic, locally produced food.

Open the blue wooden door and you will find three rooms decorated with unique murals and wooden objects that are different from what you might expect from a traditional country house.

Each room has a large bathtub, a jacuzzi, with a bubble function. I wondered how they could have carried such a large bathtub through this small entrance. This impressive bathtub is in an open space in one corner of the bedroom, and behind it is a separate shower and toilet. There are also toiletries with the name 'La Pecora Nera' painted on them, which is the name of this place.

I still haven't got used to sleeping in a different place every day on my travels. But it was here that I slept deeply and soundly for the first time. I had a proper bath for the first time in a long time and was able to fall asleep as I dried off and covered myself with the crisp white duvet.

The homemade jams, marmalades, homemade cakes and breads and the pecorino cheese produced on Giovanni's farm are served with great care. This pecorino cheese, in particular, was the pride of Mr. Giovanni. Its flavour was exquisite.

It is a place where you can enjoy warm hospitality and relaxation, and a simple but delicious and hearty breakfast table.

milk

Giovanni's pecorino was milder and less salty than I had expected, although I had expected sheep's milk cheese to have a stronger flavour.
It was softer than other cheeses I have tried elsewhere.
